BPC (Brake Power Certificate)
In Indian Railways, BPC (Brake Power Certificate) categories are classified based on the type of train (coaching vs. freight) and the nature of their operation. The certificate ensures that the train's braking system has been inspected and meets the required safety standards before departure.
1. Coaching Trains (Passenger/Mail/Express)
For coaching trains, BPC categories are often determined by the train type and the distance/duration of the round trip.
- Rajdhani / Duronto: Require a fresh BPC from both ends.
- Shatabdi: Require a fresh BPC from the primary end only.
- Mail/Express:
- Long Distance: Fresh BPC from both ends if the round trip exceeds 3500 km (ICF) or 4000 km (LHB).
- Standard Distance: Fresh BPC from the primary end only if the round trip is within 3500 km (ICF) or 4000 km (LHB) and 96 hours.
2. Freight Trains (Goods Stock)
Freight trains are generally categorized by their examination pattern:
- Close Circuit (CC) Rake: A specific type of examination where the rake is maintained for a designated circuit. Its BPC validity is often defined by kilometers (e.g., 6,000 or 7,500 km) or days (e.g., 30 or 35 days), whichever comes earlier.
- Premium Examination: Issued from nominated "A" category depots. These rakes must have a high brake power percentage (often 95% or above at the time of issue).
- End-to-End Examination: Issued for a single journey from the originating station to the destination
